War on Spain

If I were President William McKinley I would have asked Congress to declare war on Spain in 1898. One reason I would declare war is because Spain was a threat to the economic relationship between Cuba and the United States. Also, the US felt sympathy for Cuba because we also had to fight for our independence. Overall, the US wanted to protect business interest in Cuba and promote democracy.
Spain was intervening with the US trade with Cuba. Spain ended a trade agreement that reduced tariffs for many Cuban exports, so their cost inflated. After this Spain introduced more taxes and trade restrictions in Cuba that furthered angered Americans. Spain was hurting our economy and we felt like we should do something about it.
In February of 1895 Cubans began to fight against Spanish control. They were upset about Spain intervening with their economy and trade. The US felt that the Cubans fight for independence mirrored our fight for independence from Great Britain; because of this reason we sympathized with the Cubans. We supported the Cubans in their quest for independence.
